Jewish Federations Petition Pope to Help Free Alan Gross February 28, 2012 The Jewish Federations of North America is calling for support for an online petition urging Pope Benedict XVI to seek the release of Alan Gross during the upcoming papal visit to Cuba.
The petition is part of a nationwide appeal by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington to free Washington D.C.-area resident Gross, who was arrested in Cuba in December 2009. The JCRC of Greater Washington is a partner agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington.
Gross was imprisoned while conducting humanitarian activities in Cuba. He was convicted by a Cuban court for "actions against the integrity of the State," and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Since his arrest, Gross has reportedly lost around 100 pounds and is suffering from several ailments.
"We continue to urge the release of Mr. Gross on humanitarian grounds," said Michael Gelman, chair of the JFNA Executive Committee. "We stand in solidarity with the North American Jewish community in our hope that Alan can soon be reunited with his family after two long years of imprisonment."
JFNA respectfully requests that you sign this petition at
"The Gross family continues to suffer greatly — physically, economically, emotionally and spiritually — and we must do everything we can to bring this to an end," said Ron Halber, executive director of the JCRC of Greater Washington. "Please help us fulfill the primary Jewish value of pidyon shivuim, redemption of the captive."

Jewish Federations, along with other groups including the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, has been calling for Cuba to free Gross and for the United States to advocate for Gross as well. Gross's wife, Judy, spoke at JFNA's General Assembly in 2011 in Denver.

Dear Archbishop,
We, the undersigned, seek your assistance, as most esteemed ambassador of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to the United States, in raising a matter of utmost importance with His Holiness in anticipation of his upcoming visit to Cuba. Since December 2009, Alan P. Gross, a 62 year old American international development worker, has been imprisoned in Cuba for his efforts to help the Cuban Jewish community improve its access to the internet. Prior to his arrest, Alan’s life was dedicated to improving the lives of others, particularly those less fortunate. He worked in more than 50 countries—including Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa and Haiti—and never had any legal trouble in any of the countries he worked in or visited, until now.
Alan and his wife of over 40 years, Judy Gross, reside in the Washington, DC area and have two daughters—Shira (27) and Nina (24). Since his arrest, Alan’s physical and emotional health have deteriorated significantly. He has lost over 100 pounds and has developed a number of serious health issues that are cause for great concern. But more importantly, he is beginning to lose hope. Alan’s family has also faced a number of health crises since his arrest, including his 89-year old mother’s ongoing battle with lung cancer. She fears she may not live long enough to see him again. Alan and his family are suffering tremendously as a result of their separation. In addition, they are facing significant financial hardship due to the loss of Alan’s income.
Accordingly, we, the undersigned, most humbly request that whatever efforts necessary be made so that Pope Benedict XVI can obtain Alan’s release from prison on humanitarian grounds during his upcoming visit to Cuba on March 26-28, 2012.
With every good wish to Your Excellency.
Sincerely,
We are confident that any such efforts made by the Pope to gain Alan’s release will not only be enormously appreciated by the Gross family and the United States government, but by all communities of faith and the international community as a whole.
